When I think of surrender, I think of letting go. I think of letting go of what was to accept what is. I think of trusting in God.
I think of open hands. Hands that are not holding on to anything at all.
So with that in mind, envision yourself with your hands open wide and ask the Holy Spirit to show you if there is anything you need to surrender today. What shows up in your hands?
Is it a mindset? Or is it a relationship status or lack thereof one? Maybe it's finances and how it's supposed to come in. It could be food, a tv show, even certain music.
You see, the Webster's definition of surrender says it means to cease resistance and some synonyms are to give in, yield to, concede, submit or to defer.
So is there anything we aren't submitting to the Father today? Is there a nudge from the Holy Spirit that we are not allowing ourselves to yield to?
As we journey through life hand in hand with the One who made eternity, the daily gazes into our hearts are needed.
As the psalmist famously said so himself:
"Search me, God, and know my heart;
test me and know my anxious thoughts.
See if there is any offensive way in me,
and lead me in the way everlasting."
(Psalm 139: 23-24)
When we pray not my will but your will be done Father, I am not so sure it's always meant. There are moments in life when there is a struggle due to spiritual warfare or just the process of enduring while living in a fallen world. But other times, the struggle is because we are not letting go of something in our hearts.
We do have free will in this world and God is a gentleman. He won’t force you to do anything you are not sincerely willing to do.
I know that in my life, the most pivotal encounters of my walk have all been after moments of true surrender. The breakthrough I knew I needed wasn't able to happen until I finally surrendered my will for His. Once that happened, spiritual mountains moved. God was able to do what He was looking to do that whole entire time.
You see... sometimes we are afraid to let go because we think that somehow what we are holding on to is better than the unknown of letting it go. It's quite the oxymoron when you think about it.
God is the creator of the heavens and the earth. He made the stars and clouds. The green grass and the mountains. The majestic lion and the sweet butterflies were all magnificently created by our King and our Father. All made by His hands. To think that some how what we are holding on to is superior than releasing it is a lie and is deception from the father of lies. That is exactly what the enemy wants us to believe so we can stay deceived. But remember this:
The truth of God ALWAYS speaks to our spirit while the deception will only speak to our carnal selves.
Romans 8:14-16 says this:
For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. For you did not receive a spirit of slavery that returns you to fear, but you received the Spirit of sonship, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father! The Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children.
So with that in mind, when we can truly understand, at a heart level, who we are in Christ and what He did for us, something shifts. Breakthrough.
There is power in knowing our identity in Christ. We are sons and daughters of God who are seated in heavenly places with Him. We fight from victory and not for it because the enemy has already been defeated. The war has already been won.
1 Peter 2: 9 says this:
But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His wonderful light.
Therefore there is now no more condemnation because you are in Christ Jesus!
You were dead and now you are alive. You were a slave and now you are set free. You were defeated and now are victorious. You were condemned but now you are accepted into the beloved and nothing or no one will be able to snatch you out of His hand.
